  6.     When Microsoft released MS-DOS 6.0 it contained a sub-set of Norton
  7.     Backup. The bundled version is a major improvement over the old
  8.     MS-DOS standard backup program. However, it is a sub-set, and not
  9.     the full blown product. It will only allow backups to floppies, or
  10.     other DOS devices such as Bernoulli or another hard drive. There is
  11.     not much flexibility in creating backup sets and other features.
  12.     But, for $49.95, getting MS-DOS 6.0 and all the other programs it is
  13.     a bargain. I, being a tape and power user, do prefer the complete
  14.     package.

  16.     Norton Backup v2.2 for DOS is a faster, and improved version of
  17.     their earlier releases. A full installation requires about 3MB of
  18.     hard disk space. After installation, Norton's will perform a small
  19.     backup to your floppy, and if you have one, tape drive. You can opt
  20.     to cancel this operation. However, I urge you let the program run
  21.     this test. It will assure you of data integrity in the future.

  24.     Norton Backup 2.2 for DOS will read and restore backups created by
  25.     DOS 6.0 and vice versa. DOS 6.0 backup and Norton Backup are Format
  26.     and Compression compatible. Of course, this does NOT apply to users
  27.     of tape drives.

  29.     Features include:

  31.     * Cross Platform Compatibility. Interchange backup disks between DOS
  32.     and Windows Norton Backup. Use the same familiar product with either
  33.     platform for reliable backups.
  34.  
  35.     * High Speed Tape Controller. One of the things that was lacking in
  36.     the product. Norton Backup 2.2 now supports these controllers by
  37.     Colorado and Iomega.
  38.  
  39.     * QIC 40/80 Tape Support. Industry standard format that can be
  40.     interchanged, and even read by other products.
  41.  
  42.     * Scheduler. Schedule unattended backups.
  43.  
  44.     * Five Backup Types. Choose from: Full, Incremental, Differential,
  45.     Full Copy and Incremental Copy backup types.

  47.     * Network Features. Full network support.

  49.     As I mentioned, one thing lacking was support for high speed
  50.     controllers. Since I have purchased one, my format of tapes and
  51.     backup time has been drastically reduced. Norton still does not
  52.     support SCSI drives.

  54.     Norton Backup allows you to create 'sets' from which to back up. Or,
  55.     you can select files manually.  Creating a set simplifies
  56.     everything. It is very easy to include or exclude files in Norton
  57.     Backup. Once done, you do not have to do it again until you want to
  58.     make a change. Who needs to have .TMP and .BAK files backed up?  You
  59.     can just choose a set, click on Start Backup, and walk away. If you
  60.     have unattended mode active, even if you get an error, in most cases
  61.     the backup will still complete itself. You can also have a log file
  62.     that will record all errors, or complete list of files backed up
  63.     with starting and ending time. Other programs that I have looked at
  64.     have a similar feature. However, if you get an error with these
  65.     programs, the backup comes to a halt. Not so in Norton Backup. I
  66.     have the erase option set up on my tape on Full Backup. If I walk
  67.     away from my machine after initiating the backup, and that tape has
  68.     data on it, Norton will check to see if it is a Full Backup. If so,
  69.     it will erase the tape. If not, it will append the tape. It can't
  70.     get any easier than that.

  72.     Every other program, except Norton Backup, has one quirk that drives
  73.     me wild. I do backup more than one drive to a tape, especially
  74.     during Differential or Incremental, when there is not much data. All
  75.     the other programs will do the first drive, then rewind the tape to
  76.     the start and write the header. It then fast forwards the tape to
  77.     the point it stopped, and starts the second drive. It continues the
  78.     above procedure for each drive letter. This is time consuming, not
  79.     to mention wearing on the drive and tape, and slows down even a high
  80.     speed controller. Norton Backup backs up ALL the drives, and then
  81.     rewinds and writes the header from them all at the same time. This,
  82.     to me, is the most efficient way.

  84.     Norton Backup was one of the first programs I used when I started to
  85.     make backups. I have been through several versions, and it is just
  86.     getting better. The program is a snap to use for novices, but has
  87.     advanced features for several levels of users from Beginner to
  88.     Advanced, that anyone can use it. I have chosen it for my "Christmas
  89.     Shopping List" (CTM, Nov. 1993), and see it as a winner again for my
  90.     year-end picks. Registered users of either Norton Backup for DOS or
  91.     Windows can upgrade for $39. The product comes with a 60-day money
